Why It’s Vital To Annihilate The Trickery Of The Imposter Phenomenon!

Why It’s Vital To Annihilate The Trickery Of The Imposter Phenomenon!

Why It’s Vital To Annihilate The Trickery Of The Imposter Phenomenon!

PLEASE, STOP TELLING PEOPLE THEY HAVE IMPOSTER SYNDROME!

Are you a fraud?

Are you an imposter?

Are you worried ‘they’ will find you out?

These types of statements are just a small selection of the many that our clients and people in STEMM say on a daily basis. These statements and thoughts ruminate in their heads and render them impotent to take action.  They are NOT true!!

This debilitating belief of ‘being an imposter’ comes about because of a fear of needing to live up to either one’s own unrealistic expectations or the expectations of others. The fear is so strong that it contributes to a ‘syndrome’ that is seen as a badge of honour, as a requirement, as a ‘must’ in many industries.

We are being fed this belief, that we must experience imposter syndrome in the world. If one wasn’t to experience this so-called syndrome, they would be classed as an ‘outsider’, strange, unusual. I have even heard someone say to a group of up-and-coming incredibly intelligent early career researchers, “you will experience imposter syndrome and if you don’t you are the abnormal one”!

This label gets spoken about and treated like it is a must-have in so many instances.

But, let’s have a look at what the term really means.

An imposter is a person who pretends, deceives, is a cheat, a liar, a fraud, a fake, a phoney, a sham, or a hypocrite.

Are you truly one of them?

Are these labels something you really want to be known as or give to others?

Seriously, is this who you truly are?

I would say a resounding ‘NO’.

Did you know, that this so-called syndrome is most prevalent in biased, toxic work cultures that unequivocally value individualism and overwork?

So, if we put all this together so far, we have an individual, who is a cheat, a liar, a fraud, that chooses to work ridiculously long hours in a toxic, pernicious environment, for little to no recognition, is scowled upon for even thinking about working in an effective team and is expected to suffer this BS to be successful in their career?

OUCH! Do you still want to hold onto this label?

Do you really want to have this as your pathway to greatness?

I know I wouldn’t. I do not want to give others or myself a label, place anyone in a box, make anyone ‘fit in’ or place any kind of limiting bias onto anyone, particularly one that links to suffering or a harmful mental health syndrome. Even though the phrase ‘imposter syndrome’ is not on the DSM index (please let it never be either) we often bandy the term around with ease and label others or ourselves with this disempowering term.

PLEASE, STOP TELLING PEOPLE THEY HAVE IMPOSTER SYNDROME!

It’s not big and it’s not clever.

It is just a moment of experiencing the feelings of being unsure and uncertain or having self-doubt. Everyone experiences these feelings. These sensations, experiences and thoughts are normal!

It only brings about a sense of criminal fraudulence to the feeling of being unsure, uncertain and experiencing self-doubt.

The key to annihilating this trickery is to focus on expanding, developing and growing healthy work cultures that embrace diversity, advance the personal growth of their biggest asset (their people), and inspire an open and Authentic ethos.

to ask if you don’t mind. I was interested to кnow how you
center yourself and clear your thоughts before writing.
I’ve had a hard time clearing my thoughts in getting my ideas out.
I do take рleasure in writing hoᴡever it just seemѕ like the
first 10 to 15 minutes are usually wasteɗ just tгying tߋ figure out how to begin. Any ideaѕ or tips?

Hi Shirleen. Often we go into a task without first setting an clear and focussed intention of what we set out to do; or we have the massive big end goal in mid and it seems way to big so then we don’t get started on it. Break the big things into tiny tasks – go into the assigned time slot with the intention to do that one thing, tick it off, taste of success – celebrate, move onto the next. It is that simple!
